On August 21, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department announced that a woman in her 50s, residing in Okayama Prefecture, was sent to prosecutors on suspicion of threatening to kill Ren Nagase, a member of the idol group “King & Prince” (25). The woman allegedly posted a death threat against Nagase on an internet forum.

According to investigators, the woman wrote, “I’ll stab and kill Nagase” on the message board “5ch.” She is reportedly a fan of the group “Number_i” and admitted to the charges, stating she did it in retaliation after fans of Nagase posted slander against her favourite group.

The police were able to identify the woman through her IP address after receiving a complaint from Nagase’s management. In recent years, online slander and abuse have become significant social issues in Japan, with stronger penalties for defamation being introduced. However, incidents of online threats continue to rise.
