According to the Guardian, A major UK study has debunked the stereotype of the lone teenage boy gamer, revealing that 52% of the gaming audience in the country are women, up from 49% three years prior.
The study, commissioned by the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB), also found that 27% of gamers are over 44 years old, outnumbering children and teenagers at 22%. The growth in gaming is attributed to smartphones, making gaming accessible to a broader audience.
Mobile games like Candy Crush Saga and Angry Birds have contributed to the trend. 54% of respondents preferred their phone for gaming, followed by computers (51%), consoles (45%), and tablets (44%). Despite the popularity of casual smartphone titles, 47% of female gamers played disc-based games in the last six months.
The study also showed that traditional platforms still command longer playing times, and disc-based games continue to sell. The report, titled “Gaming Revolution,” highlights a widening audience exploring gaming through new platforms, with a significant focus and engagement from UK gamers.
